Services
What we can help you find
Chimney sweeping
Removing soot and creosote from the flue of a wood fireplace, wood stove or insert. Most homes with a regular fire are told to have this checked every year.
Chimney inspections
A look at the flue, firebox, damper and visible masonry, from a quick visual check up to a camera inspection. Common before buying an older house or after a long stretch of disuse.
Gas fireplace and furnace flue checks
Gas appliances burn cleaner than wood, but their vents can still block, corrode or leak. A sweep can look at the flue and venting that serves them.
Caps, crowns and flashing
The parts that keep rain, animals and debris out of the chimney. Providers can tell you whether they need a repair or a replacement.
Wood stove and insert service
Stoves and inserts have their own pipes and liners. Ask a provider what is involved before the first cold week, not during it.

Lawrence is a town of very different houses. Near the University of Kansas, the Oread neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the National Register listing for Oread describes everything from large fashionable homes to modest working class houses and early twentieth century styles. Many older homes have masonry chimneys and fireplaces that may not have been used in years, or that have been used for decades without a close look. Newer subdivisions on the edge of town more often have factory built fireplaces and gas logs. The right kind of check depends on which one you have.
The reason chimneys get attention every year is fire safety. Wood smoke leaves a residue called creosote on the inside of the flue, and it burns. The Chimney Safety Institute of America says a buildup as thin as one eighth of an inch can be enough to cause a chimney fire, and it advises burning only well seasoned wood. The National Fire Protection Association's standard for chimneys, as summarized by several cost guides, calls for chimneys, fireplaces and vents to be inspected at least once a year, with cleaning and repairs as needed. If you are not sure what you have, a sweep can tell you.
Price depends on the kind of appliance, how many flues you have, how much buildup there is, how steep or tall the roof is, and whether the provider finds a problem. One national cost guide, citing Angi, puts most chimney sweeping jobs around $130 to $380, with gas fireplaces at the low end and wood fireplaces higher. Another guide, based on Thumbtack data, shows a wider range of roughly $200 to $730. Camera inspections, repairs and liner work cost more. Quotes vary, and a provider who sees the job gives the real number.
Timing is worth a thought. Fall is the busy season, when everyone remembers the fireplace at once, and cost guides note that spring and summer can be cheaper because demand is lower. If you want to light the first fire in October, request a quote in late summer or early fall. If you are buying a house with a fireplace, ask about a more thorough inspection before closing rather than after.
Older houses and first fires deserve a little planning. If you are buying or moving into an older Lawrence house, say so in your request, because it changes what a provider may suggest, such as a camera look at the flue before you close. Tell us whether the fireplace burns wood or gas, whether it is masonry, a factory built unit, a stove or an insert, and when it was last cleaned, if you know. Do not light a fireplace that has sat unused for a long time until someone has checked it, since debris or a blocked flue can fill a room with smoke.
We connect homeowners in Lawrence and nearby communities such as Eudora, Baldwin City, Lecompton, Tonganoxie, Perry and De Soto with providers for sweeping, inspections, gas appliance flue checks and chimney repairs.
